The PHP ElePHPant gadget

The ElePHPant gadget is based on the PHP ElePHPant. It is a plastic ElePHPant-shaped casing containing an Arduino microcontroller board, some sensors and actuators. It is currently in the planning stage.

The ElePHPant gadget will be developed in coorporation with PHPBenelux. The design, hardware and software will be published under the Creative Commons License.

Robot Mobility Module design published

Yesterday, i published the first version of the design for the Robot Mobility Module. You can take a look at the documentation and feed us (the Mechanic Apes )with your comments. Now we started building the chassis for this robot (as specified in the design documentation). We will show you some photos within a couple of days. Arduino autonomous flightmachine firmware published

We are currently busy building a autonomous flying robot. Yesterday we published the first version of the software and firmware at our software repository.

The documentation is lacking at this moment, but within a week or two we will publish all documentation and specifications.

3D scanner prototype

Afgelopen weekend ben ik bezig geweest om het prototype voor een 3d scanner te ontwerpen en te bouwen. Het principe achter de scanner is vrij simpel. Je neemt twee servo motortjes, een voor de x en een voor de y-as, en maakt hiermee een pan/tilt module.Daarna neem je een sharp afstandsensor en die bevestig je aan het pan/tiltding. Het volledige apparaat kost ongeveer 60 euro, inclusief servo’s, sensoren en microcontroller.

Hunebedtrip

Afgelopen zondag zijn we met een groep mensen naar Drente geweest om de Sterrenwacht in Westerbork te bekijken en daarna een bezoek te brengen aan het hunebed in Borger. Het was een gezellig dag en we hebben zeker het plan om binnenkort weer ergens anders naar toe te gaan.

PHP BBQ

Op vrijdag 28 augustus 2009 organiseren de twee in Nederland actieve PHP gebruikersgroepen phpFreakz en phpBenelux de eerste Nederlandse PHP BBQ. Voor alle aanwezigen zal er een combinatie zijn van presentaties, netwerken, lekker eten en drinken en een hoop gezelligheid. Kosten voor deze BBQ zijn 15 euro per persoon.

We beginnen met een presentatie van Harrie Verveer van Ibuildings (Flash, Flex en Zend_Amf). Na deze presentatie is het de beurt aan jullie: We hebben drie slots van 20 minuten beschikbaar voor drie sprekers. Dus heb je een goed idee, laat het ons dan nu weten! Je kan je idee achterlaten op http://www.phpbenelux.eu/en/phpbbq2009_cfp Je hoeft dit niet voor niets te doen want de drie mensen die worden uitgekozen zullen de kosten van de BBQ ter plekke terugkrijgen als dank voor hun presentatie. Wees snel met het insturen van je idee want inzendingen dienen voor 20 augustus binnen te zijn. Mensen die een presentatie moeten geven krijgen uiterlijk 21 augustus te horen dat zij mogen presenteren.

Na deze presentaties is het tijd voor eten en drinken. De BBQ zal dan al warm zijn dus dan is het tijd om gezellig een drankje te pakken en wat eten te pakken. Blijf dan vooral lekker hangen, want als we eenmaal aan het eten en drinken zijn begonnen hebben we geen haast meer om nog weg te gaan.

Deze BBQ zal plaatsvinden bij het kantoor van onze sponsor Dutch Open Projects (http://www.dop.nu), Doornseweg 12 in Leusden. Omdat deze lokatie met het openbaar vervoer lastig te bereiken is, zullen we 's middags en 's avonds een pendelauto hebben rijden tussen station Amersfoort Centraal en het kantoor van Dutch Open Projects. Je kan op het aanmeldformulier aangeven of je hier gebruik van wenst te maken.

Front-end development wordt steeds belangrijker nu het aantal Rich Internet Applications sterk toeneemt. In de presentatie laat ik zien hoe er tegenwoordig ontwikkeld kan worden in Flash op een gestructureerde, objectgeorienteerde manier. Ik laat zien wat Flex is en wat je ermee kunt, om vervolgens te laten zien hoe je je Flash of Flex applicatie kunt laten communiceren met je PHP applicatie met behulp van AMF. Hiervoor zal ik laten zien hoe je een Amf server kunt opzetten met Zend_Amf in Zend Framework.

PHP controlled robot arm

Images Scientific Instruments released the OWI-535 Robotic Arm Edge a few months ago. This 50 euro robotarm kit comes with a standard manual remote control (with wires). I slightly modified the controller. The arm is now controlled by a embedded webserver with PHP. All 5 axis and the gripper-light can be controlled by a webuser. It is quite useless but very cool.

I am tagged by Remi Woler and now i have to participate in a sort of pyramid personal disclosure Blog thing. I hate pyramid schemes but don't want to spoil it for Remi, Ivo, Matthew, Marcus, Andi and others, so here are my seven things:

My first computer was a Commodore Vic-20. My father bought it in 1981 when i was ten years old. The computer came with a Basic programming manual and a casette-drive, but without software or games. This situation triggered me to write my first “Hello World!” program.
In 1985 my father was electronics engineer and he pushed me to learn the Forth programming language because he needed someone to program his embedded devices. This resulted in my first embedded “Hello World!” application.
I once had collection of bird eating spiders a.k.a. tarantulas. I used these spiders to test my Biosphere mark ][ climate controller, one of my graduate projects. The spiders are gone now.
After the spider experiment, i changed the tarantulas for a cat and made the “Catbot“, an electronic friend for my cat. I learned that cats don't like robots because they have the same effect on a cat as a vacuumcleaner.
The catbot is now replaced by PHPbot, a robot controlled by some PHP scripts. This device is still under development.
I believe that the consumption of good homemade icecream results in instant short-term happiness.
